Bruins Outlast Chicago's Shooting Gallery in Overtime
The Blackhawks peppered DiPietro all night, but a spread-out Boston attack found the cleaner looks and snapped a losing skid at home.
Chicago threw more pucks at the net and had more of the play, but Boston got the better looks and won 5-4 in overtime.
The Blackhawks outshot the Bruins 41-32 and had more shot attempts. Boston's chances were still worth more. By expected goals, a measure of how dangerous a team's chances were, the Bruins had 4.54 to Chicago's 4.09. More shots did not mean better shots.
Michael DiPietro made 37 saves on 41 shots, and he stopped about what his workload called for. At the other end, Arvid Soderblom made 27 saves on 32 shots. He let in a little more than Boston's chances deserved.
The Bruins' offence came from all over. Elias Lindholm, David Pastrnak, Casey Mittelstadt, Morgan Geekie and Mason Lohrei each scored once. Charlie McAvoy and JJ Peterka had two assists apiece. For Chicago, Connor Bedard had a goal and an assist on six shots.
The win ends a two-game skid for Boston, who lead the Atlantic Division.
