Oilers Snap Calgary's Run in a 4-0 Battle of Alberta
Jarry blanks the Flames while Howard and Michaels ring posts, and Edmonton's home record finally gets a lift.
Edmonton didn't need a lucky night to beat Calgary 4-0. The Oilers had the better looks from start to finish, and the scoreboard simply caught up to what happened on the ice. That ended the Flames' four-game winning streak.
The numbers back it up. Edmonton outshot Calgary 32-24. Its chances were worth 3.61 expected goals (a measure of how many goals those chances should produce), against 1.89 for the Flames. The Oilers also took 53.4% of the game's shot attempts.
It could have been worse for Calgary. Isaac Howard and Owen Michaels, who played on a line together with Trent Frederic, each hit a post. Leon Draisaitl had some of Edmonton's best individual chances and still finished without a point.
Connor McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had two assists each. Four different players scored: Kasperi Kapanen, Mathieu Joseph, Alex Formenton and defenceman Mattias Ekholm.
At the other end, Tristan Jarry stopped all 24 shots he faced, including every one of Calgary's most dangerous looks. Dustin Wolf and Devin Cooley split the night in the Calgary net.
The win moves Edmonton to 8-2-2, which is second in the Pacific. It is also a welcome result at home, where the Oilers are now 3-2-2.
