Ellis Locks the Barn Door as Sabres Shut Out San Jose
Buffalo's goalie stays unbeaten on the night in a 2-0 road win, and the Sharks never found a way past him.
Colten Ellis made every save he faced in San Jose, stopping all 24 shots in a 2-0 Sabres win over the Sharks. He played 59:58, essentially the full game, and walked out with a shutout line: 0 goals against, a perfect save percentage.
The shot count tells only part of it. By expected goals, which measures how many goals those chances should have produced, the Sharks' looks were worth 3.7. Ellis gave up none of them, so he finished 3.7 goals saved above expected, a big swing in a game Buffalo won by two.
That is a departure from his season line. Over 4 games (3 starts) he has a .900 save percentage, a 2.28 goals-against average and no shutouts before this one, with 75 saves on 83 shots. Tonight he stopped everything.
Buffalo moves to 4-4-3 on the season. San Jose (6-5-1) came in on a one-game losing streak.
