Stankoven, Ehlers and Blake Bury the Canucks 6-3
Deslauriers scores twice while a busy Meriläinen keeps Vancouver within shouting distance in its own barn
Carolina won by three in Vancouver, but the gap in play was much wider. The Hurricanes outshot the Canucks 42-17. By expected goals, a measure of how many goals a team's chances were worth, Carolina generated 5.52 to Vancouver's 1.86.
The damage came from one trio. Logan Stankoven (two goals, an assist, six shots) and Nikolaj Ehlers (two goals, an assist) played on a line with Jackson Blake, who set up three goals and put five shots on net. Nicolas Deslauriers added two goals on two shots.
The score stayed closer than that because of Leevi Meriläinen, who made 36 saves on 41 shots and was solid against Carolina's best looks. At the other end, the bounces went Vancouver's way: Pyotr Kochetkov saw only 17 shots and still gave up three.
The posts got involved too. Juuso Välimäki rang one for Carolina, and Arshdeep Bains hit one for Vancouver.
