The Vancouver Canucks enter October 4 with a 2-1-0 record and an energetic, high-scoring start to the regular season. They opened with a wild 6-5 overtime victory over Edmonton, followed by a 9-7 loss, before responding with a composed 4-1 comeback against Calgary. The victory showcased a more resilient side: Vancouver trailed entering the third period, then scored four unanswered goals while Leevi Meriläinen stopped 23 shots in his first start with the club.

Offensively, the Canucks have produced 17 goals through three games, among the strongest opening totals in franchise history. Elias Pettersson has five points in the early going, while Marco Rossi’s two-goal performance against Edmonton and recent contributions from Liam Ohgren, Drew O’Connor, Aatu Räty and Tom Willander have added depth to the attack. Elias Pettersson also scored against Calgary, underscoring the potential for contributions from the blue line.

The early results nevertheless reveal unfinished work defensively and in goal. The 9-7 defeat exposed vulnerability in transition and increased pressure on a crease affected by injuries, including Thatcher Demko’s absence. The Canucks’ immediate test is at home against the Vegas Golden Knights. Vegas enters after a 4-3 defeat to Anaheim, giving Vancouver an opportunity to build on its Calgary recovery while establishing whether its offensive momentum can be matched by greater defensive discipline.
