Rantanen's Hat Trick Snaps the Bruins' Winning Streak
Mikko Rantanen scored every Dallas goal in a 3-2 win over Boston, and the margin flattered the Bruins. The Stars had the better chances most of the night. Their looks were worth about 4.1 expected goals, a measure of how dangerous the chances were, while Boston's were worth 2.16.
Rantanen led that charge with six shots. He played on a line with Wyatt Johnston and Sam Steel. Jason Robertson added two assists, and Thomas Harley and Miro Heiskanen each set up a goal.
The reason this stayed close was Jeremy Swayman. He made 22 saves on 25 shots and stopped 11 of 13 high-danger chances. By goals saved above expected, which compares the goals allowed with the quality of shots faced, he finished at 1.1. Jake Oettinger was solid in the Dallas net, making 18 saves on 20 shots. James Hagens and Matthew Poitras scored for Boston.
Neither team hit the post or crossbar. This result was not about lucky bounces. Dallas generated more and better chances, and Rantanen buried them. The win is the Stars' second straight and ends Boston's five-game winning streak.
