Stars Hold a Big Lead While Capitals Keep Firing Back
Robertson's three goals tell one story at Capital One Arena; the chances at both ends tell another, and Kyrou has one back for Washington.
Written during the game · 8:27 PM ET. Final was DAL 6, WSH 5.
The scoreboard says Dallas has this one wrapped up at 4-1, but Washington has kept pace in the chances, with 6:51 left in the second period.
The Capitals have thrown more pucks toward the net: 32 shot attempts to Dallas's 30. Shots on goal favour the Stars 16-11, and high-danger chances sit at 14-11 for Dallas.
So what built the gap? Jason Robertson scored three times, and Jordan Kyrou answered on the power play for Washington. Expected goals, meaning how many the chances were worth, read 1.82 for Dallas and 1.69 for Washington. That is almost level, even though the goals are not.
On the other side of that, Jake Oettinger has stopped 10 of 11 shots, while Logan Thompson stopped 7 of 11 before Charlie Lindgren came in and stopped all 5. The bounces went Dallas's way early, but the game has been much closer than the score.
