Peterka Rings the Iron Twice as Blues Cash In on the Power Play
Boston peppered the net and hit metal all night, while St. Louis made its short list of chances count against Swayman.
The shot clock said Boston. The scoreboard said St. Louis 4-1. The gap came down to metal and finishing.
Boston outshot the Blues 32-18 and had nearly twice as many shot attempts, but the danger was closer to even than it looked. By expected goals, a measure of how much each team's chances were worth, Boston generated 2.32 and St. Louis 2.5. The Bruins simply couldn't finish.
JJ Peterka rang the iron twice, and his linemate Pavel Zacha found metal once. Mark Kastelic also hit iron, so Boston clanged four shots off the frame. Joel Hofer handled nearly everything else, stopping 31 of 32.
At the other end, St. Louis went 2 for 3 on the power play while Boston went 0 for 2. Jeremy Swayman stopped just 14 of 18. Robert Thomas and Philip Broberg each had three points. Mason McTavish fired five shots without scoring, so the Blues left goals on the table too.
