Scheifele Fires Away as Habs Defencemen Steal the Heritage Classic
Hutson and Guhle provide the goals, Winnipeg's power play comes up empty, and a goalie duel tilts Montréal's way 2-1.
Winnipeg spent the night making the better chances and still walked away with nothing. Montréal won 2-1, and the gap between how the game was played and how it ended came down to one man in the Canadiens crease.
The Jets outshot Montréal 35-21, and their chances were worth more, too: 3.92 expected goals (how many goals their looks would usually produce) to 3.24. Jacob Fowler stopped 34 of 35, saving about 2.92 goals more than an average goalie would have on those shots. That is the whole result.
Mark Scheifele fired seven shots in 25:04 and came up empty. Winnipeg went 0 for 4 on the power play, and nothing even found the iron.
At the other end, Stuart Skinner was good too, stopping 19 of 21. But Lane Hutson and Kaiden Guhle, two defencemen, beat him. Cole Caufield set up both goals without registering a single shot of his own. Fowler got the bounces and the saves, and Winnipeg didn't finish enough of its chances.
