The Capitals defenceman beat Los Angeles late in the first period, but Washington could not hold the Kings off at home.
Cole Hutson found the net for Washington on the power play, but the Capitals still lost 5-2 at home to the winless Los Angeles Kings.
The defenceman scored at 18:35 of the first period with the man advantage. It was his only point of the night and his second goal of the season. He finished with three shots on goal, one of them the power-play goal. At even strength he had two shots on goal and no points.
Hutson played 21:44 over 24 shifts, second among Washington's 18 skaters and second among the team's six defencemen. That is more than his season average of 18.8 minutes a game. He was minus-2 and gave the puck away once. He had no hits, blocks or takeaways.
Over nine games he now has two goals and three assists. The goal was the useful part of a night that otherwise slipped away from Washington, now 5-3-0 on the season.
