Tomkins Stands Tall as Oilers Steal One at the Garden
The Rangers had more of the puck and more of the looks at Madison Square Garden, and the Oilers still walked out with a 4-1 win. The difference was simple: Edmonton finished, and Matt Tomkins stopped nearly everything.
New York outshot Edmonton 29-25 and took 58 shot attempts to 50. By expected goals -- how many goals a team's chances were worth -- the Rangers held a slim edge, 2.98 to 2.74. Close to even on chances, then, but nowhere near even on the scoreboard.
Tomkins made 28 saves on 29 shots, including 10 of 11 from the most dangerous areas. At the other end, Dylan Garand stopped 21 of 25.
Colton Dach scored twice on four shots, and Evan Bouchard had a goal and three assists in 25:42 of ice time. Connor McDavid added a goal and an assist on six shots. New York's lone goal came from Pavel Dorofeyev, and Tye Kartye rang one off the post -- the bounces simply went Edmonton's way.
