Penguins Ring the Posts and Leave Montréal Empty-Handed
Pittsburgh spent most of the night with the puck pointed at Montréal's net and still flew home with a single point. The Canadiens won 5-4 in overtime, but if you only watched the flow, you'd have picked the visitors.
Here's the simple version: Pittsburgh threw 70 shot attempts toward the net to Montréal's 47. That's about 59.8% of all the attempts in the game, meaning roughly three of every five pucks fired at a net were going the Penguins' way. Their chances were worth a bit more too, at 3.63 expected goals (how many goals their looks would usually produce) against Montréal's 3.13.
The bounces did the rest. Tommy Novak and Egor Chinakhov both rang shots off the post. Between the pipes, Jacob Fowler stopped 25 of 29, while Sergei Murashov stopped 22 of 27.
Sidney Crosby and Erik Karlsson had three points apiece in a losing cause, and the road woes continue for a Penguins club now 1-5-1 away from home. Montréal, meanwhile, keeps stacking wins.
