Brossoit Bails Out the Ducks in Edmonton
Mintyukov and Sennecke each score twice as Anaheim hands the West-leading Oilers a home loss they mostly outplayed their way into
Edmonton was the better team for most of this game and still lost it. Laurent Brossoit is the main reason the Anaheim Ducks left with a 5-4 win.
The Oilers put more pucks at the net and created the more dangerous looks. By expected goals -- how many goals a team's chances were worth -- they won 5.43 to 3.62. Brossoit faced 27 shots, made 23 saves and stopped 11 of 14 from the most dangerous areas. That added up to 1.43 goals saved above expected, meaning he kept out more than an average goalie would have.
The posts helped too. Leon Draisaitl and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins each rang one, and with Mikael Granlund hitting one for Anaheim, the iron took a goal-worth chance from both sides.
At the other end, Pavel Mintyukov and Beckett Sennecke scored twice each. Matt Tomkins gave up 5 goals on 21 shots. The Oilers still lead the West, and this was the kind of loss where the bounces went Anaheim's way.
