DeBrusk Hits the Post and Vancouver Falls a Goal Short in San Jose
A second-period ping off the iron stayed a miss, and Askarov and the Sharks made it stick in a 3-2 finish.
Written during the game · 12:30 AM ET. Final was VAN 2, SJS 3.
A few inches the other way, and Jake DeBrusk changes this game. His shot in the 2nd period, 3:44 in, clanged off the post. It was the only iron either team hit all night.
At that point Vancouver already had the lead the Sharks would later erase. The Canucks led 1-0 when DeBrusk rang it, and he had a chance to make it 2-0. Instead the puck stayed out, and Liam Ohgren got the second goal late in the period.
The Sharks then rallied with three goals in the third: Will Smith twice and Mason Marchment once, for a 3-2 final. Yaroslav Askarov made 23 saves on 25 shots, including 7 saves on 8 high-danger shots.
The game ended close on shots, 25-24 for Vancouver on goal. That is why one post matters. Vancouver had enough good looks to win, and the one that nearly doubled the lead hit iron.
