Cooley Bails Out Flames as Red Wings Fall in Calgary
Farabee and Gridin cash in, Calgary's power play goes perfect, and Copp's lone goal is all Detroit can solve against the Flames goalie.
Detroit had more of the puck and the better looks for most of the night in Calgary, and still left with a 4-1 loss. The reason was in the Flames' crease: Devin Cooley stopped 28 of 29 shots and gave the Red Wings almost nothing for their effort.
The gap shows in the chances. Detroit's looks were worth 2.54 expected goals (how many goals a team's chances would usually produce), against 1.68 for Calgary. Cooley was sharpest in tight, turning aside 12 of 13 shots from the most dangerous areas. Only Andrew Copp, who led Detroit with five shots, got one past him.
At the other end, Calgary made its smaller share count. Joel Farabee scored and set up two more for a three-point night, and Matvei Gridin added a goal and an assist. The Flames went 2-for-2 on the power play, while Detroit went 0-for-2. John Gibson allowed four goals on 25 shots, and the bounces simply went Calgary's way.
The Flames have now won two straight, though at 3-6-0 they still sit sixth in the Pacific. Detroit falls to 4-3-3.
