Senators Pile Five on Schmid as Ullmark Keeps Florida Quiet
Halliday and Stützle each score and set one up while the Tkachuk brothers' trio manages a lone goal in the Ottawa barn.
Ottawa spent the night on the front foot and finally got paid for it. The Senators outshot Florida 30-18 and took 54.8% of the shot attempts, meaning they were firing at the net far more often than the Panthers were.
The chances themselves were closer than the score. Ottawa's looks were worth about 2.53 expected goals (how many goals those chances would usually produce), and they scored five. That gap lands on Akira Schmid, who made 25 saves on 30 shots in his start for a Florida crease missing Jacob Markstrom. The bounces went Ottawa's way, too: Florida's Garnet Hathaway rang a post, as did Ottawa's Michael Amadio.
At the other end, Linus Ullmark was steady, stopping 16 of 17, including 10 of 11 high-danger shots.
The scoring came from all over. Stephen Halliday had a goal and an assist on four shots, Tim Stützle matched him with a goal and an assist on a line with Claude Giroux, who also scored, and Jake Sanderson set up two. Warren Foegele and Shane Pinto also scored.
Florida's answer was Brady Tkachuk, playing alongside Matthew Tkachuk and Sam Bennett, with the Panthers' only goal.
