Flames Outlast the Hurricanes Through a Barrage at the Saddledome
Carolina rang the posts over and over in Calgary, and the Flames finally found their first home win of the season.
Carolina had the puck, the chances and most of the shooting, and still left the Saddledome on the wrong end of a 3-2 score. The Calgary Flames got their first home win of the season by surviving a night when the Hurricanes simply could not finish.
The chance gap was wide. By expected goals (how many goals a team's chances were worth), Carolina's looks added up to 4.79 against Calgary's 3.24. The Hurricanes also attempted 81 shots to 58.
Devin Cooley absorbed most of it, stopping 34 of 36, including 12 of 13 high-danger shots. The iron did the rest: Carolina hit the post or crossbar five times, with K'Andre Miller ringing it twice and Sebastian Aho, Jalen Chatfield and Logan Stankoven once each.
At the other end, Morgan Frost had a goal and an assist, while Yegor Sharangovich and Matvei Gridin also scored. Calgary went 1 for 4 on the power play; Carolina was blanked on two chances.
The bounces went Calgary's way. For a 1-6-0 team, they'll take it.
