Woll Holds the Fort as Flyers Cling to a Tie in Detroit
Philadelphia's winless club is still level because its goalie has turned away every close-range look, with Detroit on the power play late in the 2nd.
Written during the game · 9:11 PM ET. Final was PHI 1, DET 2.
Joseph Woll is the reason the Flyers are still level with the Red Wings. Detroit has had the better of the play, and the game sits at 1-1 only because Philadelphia's goalie keeps saying no.
Woll has made 18 saves on 19 shots. That includes 7 saves on 7 high-danger chances, the best looks Detroit can get. The only puck to beat him was Anton Johansson's tying goal early in the 2nd, set up by Dylan Larkin and Justin Faulk.
The chances explain why this matters. Detroit has outshot Philadelphia 19-9 on goal and has 17 high-danger chances to the Flyers' 6. By expected goals, which is how many goals the chances were worth, Detroit's were worth 2.86. Woll has allowed one, so he has saved about 1.86 more goals than expected.
Matvei Michkov scored the opening goal late in the 1st, and Tyson Foerster hit a post in the 2nd. Detroit also rang one off the post, from Larkin. With 43 seconds left in the 2nd and Detroit on a power play with 1:27 remaining, Woll is still the one holding this game level for a Flyers team that is 0-5-3.
