Kraken Flip the Script in Detroit
Grubauer steadies the crease while Gaudreau and Meyers cash in their looks, turning a shot-volume night for the Red Wings upside down.
Seattle won because finishing and goaltending beat volume. Detroit had the puck more and pushed the pace, but the Kraken turned their best looks into goals and got the steadier night in net.
What the iron said: Detroit owned 60.4% of shot attempts, and they also led in expected goals — a measure of how dangerous the chances were — yet the scoreboard swung Seattle’s way. There were no posts or crossbars either, so the bounces weren’t off the metal.
How Seattle converted: Frederick Gaudreau buried two on two shots, Ben Meyers stacked three points, and Berkly Catton and Mackie Samoskevich chipped in finishes. That’s Seattle’s depth doing damage, with several Kraken outscoring their individual expected looks. Brandon Montour drove plays from the back end with two assists.
Why Detroit couldn’t cash: Lucas Raymond produced but didn’t finish, while Michael Brandsegg-Nygård and Viktor Arvidsson found the sheet without tilting the result.
The goalie swing: Philipp Grubauer stopped 38 of 41 and, by goals saved above expected, was nearly one goal better than the quality he faced — outdueling Detroit’s starters. That matters for a Seattle team that’s scoring from everywhere but still sorting out the blue line after Ryan Lindgren’s injury. At 2-2-0, they’re very much in the race — and nights like this show why.
