Devils Outlast Islanders 5-4 in Overtime on Long Island
New Jersey owned this game almost from end to end and still needed overtime to leave Long Island with a 5-4 win. The Devils fired 50 shots on goal to the Islanders' 23, more than two to one, and took a little under two of every three shot attempts. The quality matched the volume. By expected goals, a measure of how many goals a team's chances were worth, the Devils' looks added up to 5.24 against 2.98 for New York.
The reason it stayed close sat in the Devils' own crease. Jake Allen stopped 19 of 23 shots, and New York's chances were worth about three goals. The Islanders scored four. Allen's goals saved above expected came in at -1.02, which means he gave up roughly one more goal than those chances should have produced.
Up front, Nico Hischier had the most dangerous chances of any skater, with his looks worth 1.18 expected goals on six shots, but he finished with an assist and no goals. Luke Evangelista, who played on a line with Hischier and Timo Meier, had a goal and an assist. Jack Hughes also had a goal and an assist in a team-high 23:36 of ice time among forwards. Defenceman Dougie Hamilton scored as well.
For New York, Simon Holmstrom had a goal and an assist, and Bo Horvat set up two goals. That was enough to get the Islanders a point. The win runs New Jersey's streak to four straight and leaves the Devils second in the Metropolitan at 12-5-0.
