Sabres Cash In While Panthers Chase the Game
Buffalo turned Florida’s shot-attempt edge into a scoreboard win by finishing the better looks and getting the steadier crease work. The Sabres converted pressure into five, while the Panthers pushed plenty of pucks toward the net but left chances on the table — two of them off the post by Aaron Ekblad and Seth Jones.
Under the hood, Buffalo’s chances added up to a little more than Florida’s — roughly 3.64 expected goals for to 3.09 — and they cashed those chances. In goal, Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen added value with about 0.71 goals saved above expected. Florida didn’t get the same lift; their tandem couldn’t match that bar, and the gap showed up on the sheet.
Special teams were a wash in results — two power‑play strikes each — but the Panthers’ looks often stopped a hair short, including those two irons. For Buffalo, Tage Thompson produced, Jack Quinn and Peyton Krebs fed plays, and Olen Zellweger fired six shots, while the skaters in front ate 18 blocks to help protect the lead.
Takeaway: the Sabres turned chance quality into goals; the Panthers need cleaner finishing and a firmer night in net.
