Mammoth Lean on Vejmelka and Finishing Touch in Buffalo
The Utah Mammoth didn’t just win the scoreboard battle 4-1 — they owned the quality of chances and finally turned pressure into finish. Utah’s looks were worth more than four goals by expected goals, while Buffalo’s chances added up to far less, and that gap showed up in the goals.
This wasn’t a one-line show. Anders Lee and Kailer Yamamoto both finished their looks, Nick Schmaltz added another, and John Marino chipped in from the back end. Utah fired 30 shots and kept the heat on, and when bounces mattered, metal had its say: two shots rang iron — Dylan Guenther for Utah and Josh Norris for Buffalo — the kind of near-misses that swing momentum without touching the sheet.
In net, Karel Vejmelka brought calm with 23 saves on 24 shots and a strong goals saved above expected — about a goal and a half better than the chances he faced — the exact reset Utah needed after recent questions. Across from him, Colten Ellis saw the tougher workload and was beaten by Utah’s finish. For a team still planting its flag in the West, this was about control, conversion, and a goalie who backed it up.
