Silovs Holds the Fort for Pittsburgh in Utah Loss

The Penguins goalie kept a leaky night within reach as the Mammoth pushed through a shaky Pittsburgh defence.

By MA Insights

Arturs Silovs took the loss, but he was the reason Pittsburgh was still in it. The Penguins gave up a pile of good looks to Utah, and their goalie covered for a lot of it.

The tracking numbers back that up. Goals saved above expected -- how many goals a goalie stops compared with what an average goalie would stop on the same chances -- has Silovs in the plus column for the season at +3.77. His 216 saves on 243 shots and two shutouts across nine games show a goalie who has been giving his team a chance to win.

His season save percentage of .890 looks ordinary, but he has stopped 80 percent of high-danger chances. Expected goals against -- what the shots he faced were worth -- sits at 30.77, and he has allowed fewer than that.

Pittsburgh's defence was short-handed, and the goalie bailed it out. The result still went Utah's way.
