Mammoth Outshoot the Oilers and Still Get Buried at Home
Vejmelka gets little help in net while Simashev rings iron twice and Utah's best looks die on the posts
Edmonton 6, Utah 2 — and the scoreboard tells almost none of the story. The Utah Mammoth threw more pucks at the net, took more shots and had slightly better chances, yet the Oilers left with a four-goal win.
Utah outshot Edmonton 28-21 and directed 62 shot attempts toward the net to Edmonton's 45. By expected goals — how many goals a team's chances were worth — Utah sat at 2.82 to Edmonton's 2.55. On chances alone, this was a coin flip leaning Utah.
The difference was in the crease. Tristan Jarry stopped 26 of 28, including all 12 of Utah's high-danger shots. At the other end, Karel Vejmelka allowed five goals on 17 shots. The bounces went Edmonton's way too: Dmitri Simashev rang the iron twice on Utah's best looks.
Connor McDavid had five points, and Leon Draisaitl added two. Mikhail Sergachev and John Marino scored for Utah.
