Will Smith Sets Up a Goal, Sharks Drop Extra-Time Decision in Detroit
San Jose's forward logged the second-most minutes among Sharks skaters as the Red Wings won a shootout 4-3.
Will Smith picked up an assist and finished a plus-1 in the Sharks' 4-3 shootout loss at Detroit, playing 25:11 over 24 shifts. That was second among San Jose's 18 skaters and second among its 12 forwards.
He put five shots on goal: two at even strength and three on the power play. His one point, the assist, came at even strength. He did not score, and he was charged with one giveaway.
That ice time sits well above his season average of 19.9 minutes a game. The shot count is also a jump: he has 21 shots across 8 games this season, so five in one night is a big share of that. His season line is now three goals and three assists for six points.
The Sharks, now 4-3 on the year, still sit in a wildcard spot. Smith's night was busy and productive in shots, but it did not turn into the extra point that might have settled the game in regulation.
