Hurricanes Tilt the Ice in Philadelphia
Aho and Jankowski supply the finish, Kochetkov stays tidy as Flyers find only the post
Carolina had the better looks all night and turned that edge into a 4-1 road win over Philadelphia. The flow backed it up: the Hurricanes generated chances worth an expected goals for of 3.41 (expected goals measure the quality of chances) and owned a 59 percent share of shot attempts, a combo that speaks to both pressure and quality.
The finishers were the faces you’d expect and one you might not. Sebastian Aho posted a goal and an assist, while Mark Jankowski added a clean strike. The middle of the lineup kept the ice tilted: Andrei Svechnikov (goal, assist), William Carrier (two assists), Shayne Gostisbehere (goal) and Sean Walker (assist) all chipped in. Even with that push, the Flyers had two close calls off iron—Owen Tippett and Travis Sanheim each hit the post—but little else broke their way.
In net, Pyotr Kochetkov turned away 18 of 19 to preserve the gap. Joseph Woll stopped 26 of 30 under far heavier danger; the bounces and the better chances favored Carolina. Given the start to the season, this game read like more of the same: Carolina’s depth traveled, while Philadelphia’s finishing and defensive leaks remained costly.
